Use a teething ring
As well as soothing her tender gums, a teething ring can also help your child to practise using her developing jaw. Cold rings can be particularly useful for calming down hot, inflamed areas and the process of chewing should provide a happy distraction from any discomfort.
Create comfort food
Try making mealtimes a source of comfort and pain relief by giving her hard, cold foods to gnaw on. Refrigerated slices of apple, pear, carrot and cucumber are all healthy and should provide some relief. Chilling down bottles of breast milk or formula to give during feeds may also help to relieve your baby’s aches and pains.
Give her a rub
Try taking a hands-on approach by gently massaging your baby’s gums with a clean finger. Often babies crave contact with their parents and the gentle rubbing motion may soothe her angry gums. If she is very distressed don’t try to force your finger into her mouth, as this will only cause further aggravation.
Seek sweet relief
Pain relief gels containing local anaesthetic and sugar-free paracetamol solutions are now widely available for babies and young children, and can provide easy and quick relief. Ensure you follow the instructions according to your child’s age and if you have any concerns, speak to your GP.
Get a second opinion
Many symptoms are attributed to teething which may not actually be a result of your baby’s imminent incisors, so don’t be afraid to speak to your doctor if you have any concerns. While a red face and irritation are normal, any feverishness or prolonged excessive pain may be due to another condition and it is always worth getting anything you're not sure about checked out by a professional.
