'What do mums really want for Mother's Day?' asks Kirsty McCabe

"Whatever your journey to becoming a parent, and no matter the road that lies ahead, no words can properly convey just how amazing life is with small people in it."

I’m quite excited about Mother’s Day this year. Usually nothing much happens unless I drop specific reminders, as my husband is from South Africa where they celebrate it in May. Not that he suddenly remembers then, either...

But this year, my children are a little bit older and more aware of what’s going on. For the past few weeks I’ve caught my eldest singing songs and muttering about 'giving the mums a hug' and other random snippets of mother-related chat. This is, I think, all part of the preparation for the Mother’s Day Assembly at his school. And has resulted in me dodging a few questions about 'how babies get into mummies tummies' - he is only five, and that chat can wait a while yet.

The assembly happens today, so as you read this I will probably be crammed into the school hall with the other mums all holding back the tears. Whether they will be tears of pride or laughter I’ll find out soon enough.

One thing is for sure, becoming a mum turns your world upside down, changes you and how you view things, makes life more difficult, more expensive, and yet, I wouldn’t change it for the world. We might laugh, cry or moan but we know how lucky we are.

Next week I’ll be attending the Tommy’s Baby Awards, which has been celebrating special individuals and organisations making a difference to the lives of families all over the UK for over twenty years.

Tommy’s funds research into stillbirth, premature birth and miscarriage and provides information for parents-to-be. So it’s going to be another emotional afternoon, especially when it comes to the awards for those who have triumphed against adversity.

Whatever your journey to becoming a parent and no matter the road that lies ahead, no words can properly convey just how amazing life is with small people in it. Even when you have a poorly clingy two-year-old who only wants Mummy in the middle of the night before throwing up all over your new mattress and clean sheets.

Finally, if you want something other than the obligatory bunch of flowers this year then I’d check out Merci Maman. For the past year, eagle eyed weather watchers may have spotted that I have been wearing the same necklace time after time. It’s beautifully engraved with my husband’s name on one circle and my children’s names on the other interlinked circle. The perfect way of always keeping them close to my heart.

I hope you get spoiled this Sunday, or in other words - you get a full night of uninterrupted sleep, a lie in, all meals cooked by somebody else, no laundry and definitely no changing nappies.

There isn't anything like celebrating mother's day every year for a mother. It's the time when we let our mothers truly relax. The assignment writing service reported that they either want love, plenty of alone time, or a day for retreat.
