Tower Bridge in the winter sun.

Kirsty McCabe takes time out to be a tourist in London.

Instead of rushing through on your way to somewhere else, take some time to enjoy the city and all it has to offer. In the run up to Christmas there are always new attractions and activities to try. Tower Bridge launches new seasonal packages this winter - and Kirsty took a trip to Tower Bridge to try one out.

Tower Bridge is one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

It sits among the ancient and the new, and provides access across the river for thousands of Londoners and tourists daily. It really is an iconic part of London.

You can now take the whole family to explore Tower Bridge and enjoy unforgettable views of London. And, if you are brave enough, you can even step onto the glass floor walkway high above the Thames.

My boys love trips into central London. The more train, tube and bus journeys we take the happier they are (we obviously haven’t done it in rush hour!). Add a bridge into the mix and they were very excited. We took a walk along the bottom, before we entered the bridge and took a look at people already on the glass walkway. It was at this point I realised I may have made an error by wearing a dress. It really is a glass floor to the pavement and river below.

It can take the weight of an elephant - this little man will be fine.

The exhibition starts with a lift journey to the very top where you can take your time and soak up the atmosphere and stories about Tower Bridge. If you have small children you will get dragged straight to the walkways for the view of London life. Both sides have large glass panels in the floor, and it’s really interesting to watch people’s reactions to walking over glass 42 metres high above the ground.

My two were quite hesitant and preferred to hold my hand. Other children were happily sitting on the floor, nonplussed by the whole thing. Others (mostly the adults) skirted the edge of the glass and wouldn’t go near it. By way of reassurance, the glass floor panels can apparently take the equivalent weight to one elephant, or two London Black Cabs. And those brave enough will be rewarded by spectacular views. If you don’t mind getting a little bit dizzy, don’t forget to look up on the west walkway to see the view reflected in the mirror above.

Bridge Opening Times

Of course, the best time to enjoy Tower Bridge is when the bascules open to allow tall ships or other vessels to pass through. You can plan your visit to coincide with a bridge lift and if you miss the magical moment, you can download the Bridge Raise App to let you see what it’s like as you stand on the glass panels.

Special Seasonal Packages

In the run-up to Christmas, unique family days out are available through the Tower Bridge exhibition website and children will take away a souvenir RedBus children’s backpack and miniature puzzle. It’s a nice way to make a festive day extra special.

Discuss this story

The Tower Bridge Exhibition really enlightened some positive sightings in London. I was lucky enough to be among those who had experience it all themselves and loved all of it as well. The suggestion was passed by without whom, it wouldn't have had been possible.

I loved your idea to spend some time to explore where we live. Most of us look for distant places to enjoy time with family and the travel alone takes a good part of our trips. It is always better we try to spend time finding some beautiful places near we stay.

I don't know if I could stand on the glass that little guy is standing on! That would freak me out! I am in the tree removal business and am always up pretty high but even I have my limits! The innocence blissfulness of of youth is wonderful.
