With an eclectic mix of knick-knacks and bundles of nostalgic charm, the family home of Belle & Boo’s Kate Caines is both colourful and calming
The nursery at Rose Cottage is, at first glance, perfectly sweet and simple. Nothing more, nothing less. But on closer inspection, this lovely airy room at the top of the cottage is actually bursting with quirky details – perfect for sparking little imaginations. Rose Cottage is one of a row of neat Victorian houses in Bermondsey, just south of the River Thames, and the abode of Kate Caines, one half of the “contemporary but with a vintage twist” online boutique Belle & Boo, whose aim is to capture the magic of childhood. The nursery is the domain of Kate’s four-month-old daughter, Robyn.
Kate moved into Rose Cottage three years ago, although her partner Patrick has been living there for six years. “It’s a great neighbourhood,” says Kate. “It’s close to the river and Bermondsey Market. There’s also lots going on round here for young families.” The interior of the house is eclectic. “People come round and say, ‘Wow! Your house is full of everything and anything, and it really shouldn’t go, but it does’,” says Kate. “We are not ‘matching curtains and carpet’ types. If we see something and love it, we want to have it in our home.”
