There’s surely no sweeter sound than that of a child’s happy laughter and today is sure to be full of bellyfulls of giggles. But, as the old saying goes, it really is the best medicine too – emotionally and physically. While adults only laugh four to five times a day on average, children can manage an astonishing 300 guffaws with ease. In the fast pace of frenetic family life, it’s easy to forget about the power of humour, so how can you make sure you are giving your child his recommended daily dose?
“Two key concepts for entertainers are surprise and anxiety,” explains author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen, who has been entertaining children with his humorous work for more than 30 years. “Try acting like you don’t know what’s going on – children find this hilarious,” he says. “Create an expectation with words or movement and when your audience least expects it, disrupt or invert it. So get the words of nursery rhymes wrong, or pretend to eat the plate instead of the food.” There’s plenty of opportunity to hone your humour and sharpen those slapstick skills with Comic Relief  – don a red nose for instant laughs and a good cause.
