There is something about crossing water that makes any journey feel more like a voyage. Standing on the wind-whipped deck of a Wightlink ferry, watching the lights of Portsmouth fade into the distance to be replaced by open water, historic forts and the HMS Warrier battleship, you can almost taste adventure in the salty sea air.

Better known for housing Queen Victoria during her mourning period in the stately Osborne House and swarms of British holidaymakers on its beaches in the Seventies, the Isle of Wight has had something of an image revamp of late, playing host to the likes of Kate Moss at raucous music festivals, keen hikers on its unspoiled natural landscape as well as dedicated foodies seeking the famed local garlic, cheese and meats.

Those who wish to discover another, lesser-seen side to the island, would do very well to pick up Wightlink’s Secret Wight brochure, detailing a plethora of family-friendly adventure challenges across the island.

If the idea of an adventure holiday sounds a little out of your comfort zone, never fear. Here at Junior, we couldn’t exactly claim to be rock-climbing, abseiling high-octane adventurous types, and have valiantly tested a series of said challenges for your delectation.

Read on for the insider's guide to the best accommodation and most exciting family challenges on the Isle of Wight.

And if your family is going to take a dog in a journey like that, you have to ask Product Manager of a Pet company for some tips first. Because it may bring some problems.
